Discover Ristorante Il Cantuccio

If you’re heading toward the Phlegraean Fields and find yourself near Via Agrippina, 4, 80070 Bacoli NA, Italy, make sure you reserve a table at Ristorante Il Cantuccio. I’ve dined here twice over the past year-once in late spring when the sea breeze rolled in from the Gulf of Pozzuoli, and again in early autumn when the evenings felt quieter and more intimate. Both visits confirmed why this restaurant consistently earns glowing reviews from locals and travelers alike.

The location alone sets the mood. Bacoli is known for its volcanic landscapes and ancient Roman ruins, and the restaurant fits naturally into that setting. It’s not flashy or overly modern. Instead, it leans into rustic charm: warm lighting, neatly dressed tables, and an atmosphere that feels unmistakably Italian. According to data from the Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT), Campania sees millions of domestic and international visitors annually, many drawn by culinary tourism. Restaurants like this play a major role in that appeal, offering regional flavors that reflect centuries of tradition.

The menu focuses heavily on seafood, which makes sense given Bacoli’s coastal identity. On my first visit, I ordered spaghetti alle vongole. The clams were fresh, briny, and perfectly balanced with garlic and olive oil. The pasta was cooked al dente, just as the Accademia Italiana della Cucina recommends for authentic Italian preparation. That detail might sound small, but texture is everything in Italian cuisine. Overcooked pasta can ruin an otherwise excellent dish. Here, it was flawless.

Another standout was the grilled catch of the day. The waiter explained that the fish is sourced locally whenever possible, a practice increasingly recommended by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for sustainable dining. The preparation was simple-olive oil, lemon, and a sprinkle of sea salt-but that simplicity is exactly what makes southern Italian food shine. When ingredients are high quality, you don’t need to complicate them.

On my second visit, I explored more of the menu. The antipasti platter featured octopus salad, marinated anchovies, and lightly fried calamari. Each dish showcased careful technique. The octopus, for example, was tender rather than rubbery-a result of precise cooking time and proper resting, something chefs often learn through years of hands-on experience. It’s clear the kitchen team understands both tradition and execution.

Service deserves its own mention. The staff are attentive without hovering. They guide you through the menu, suggest wine pairings, and happily explain regional specialties. When I asked about their house white wine, the server recommended a Falanghina from Campania. The crisp acidity complemented the seafood beautifully. According to the Consorzio Tutela Vini Campi Flegrei, Falanghina is one of the region’s most representative grape varieties, and tasting it here felt like experiencing Bacoli in a glass.

What makes this place stand out isn’t just the food or the location. It’s the consistency. Online reviews often highlight reliability-fresh ingredients, fair pricing, and generous portions. During peak tourist season, many coastal restaurants struggle to maintain quality under pressure. Yet both times I visited, the pacing from kitchen to table was smooth, even with a full dining room.

There are, of course, small limitations. Parking near Via Agrippina can be tight during busy evenings, so arriving early or using local transport is a smart move. And because the focus leans strongly toward seafood, meat lovers may find fewer options. That said, the available land-based dishes, like grilled meats and classic pasta with ragù, are prepared with equal care.

In a region famous for culinary excellence-from Naples’ pizza heritage to Campania’s buffalo mozzarella-this restaurant holds its own by staying true to local roots. Fresh seafood, traditional recipes, thoughtful wine pairings, and a welcoming atmosphere all come together naturally. Whether you’re planning a romantic dinner, a family gathering, or simply exploring Bacoli’s dining scene, this spot offers an experience that feels authentic, relaxed, and genuinely memorable.

  • From the moment we walked in, the service started to be amazing, waiters with a smile on their faces, and they made you feel welcome. They spoke English very well and gave us some suggestions of what to eat. They give you a preview of fresh fish available on the day for you to choose and how they can make it. We ordered oysters, which were very fresh and delicious, also ordered house wine, which was a very good choice. They first serve you the pasta and and then they take the fish away to prepare it for you to eat. The desert was tiramisu and caramel tarta they were delicious, not very sweet, which make you want more. Overall I was soo satisfied with their service and their food. We also met the chef who came out and spoke to us, he spoke very good enlgihs also. I will definitely recommend this place when you are in town it's a must try. I will be going back and it was a great experience in this restaurant.

  • Il Cantuccio was hands down one of the BEST restaurants in Italy. We traveled through Italy from Tuscany to Naples in September of 2013, and the local residents of Monte Di Procida highly recommended this restaurant. Il Cantuccio is literally a five minute walk from the ocean, and I could not believe how fresh the seafood was! We were served several courses of freshly prepared (absolutely DELICIOUS) food. Every plate that came out of the kitchen clearly showed the chef's passion for creating both classic and unique cuisine. We had the pleasure of meeting the chef/owner Luigi Lucci, and I was shocked that such a young man was behind the scenes of one of our best experiences that we had on our trip. Thanks Luigi, we know where we are eating next time we visit Monte Di Procida!
